Biography
Georgie Hopton (born 1967, North Yorkshire) lives and works in London. She graduated from St. Martins in 1989.
Hopton cites nature as supplying inspiration, materials, tools and teaching. Until recently, many long summers had been spent at her upstate New York farm, where she had the luxury of being immersed in it. Direct experiment with the things she grew resulted in an evolving collection of textiles, made under the umbrella title Produce. These, she says, are ‘like the olive oil, pasta and anchovies an upmarket greengrocer can’t resist supplying’, believing that the whole meal, rather than just one part, should be considered.
Moving between figuration, abstraction and pattern, working with and across varied media, collage forms the core of the artist’s practice. Citing her passion for colour and texture as coming directly from her mother’s cottage industry quilt-making and knitting, Hopton feels indebted to her idiosyncratic sensibility. Like her heroes of the Wiener Werkstaette and the Arts and Crafts movement, her heart lies in creativity with no boundaries and will often insist, like them, that the detail of a curtain or border are necessary additions, to frame the view.
