Hand-forged black carbon steel scissors from the Island of Tanegashima - one of the Ōsumi Islands off the southern coast of Kyushu. Known for its iron sand and coniferous forests, blacksmiths have been active on Tanegashima island since the 12th century. Tsukehagane, or forge-welding, is a technique that draws on the flow of swordsmithing, and demands the skill of an experienced artisan. I commissioned these scissors with the intention to offer the only pair you will ever need: they can be used for cutting paper, fabric and plants. These are the same scissors I use on location.
Tanebasami are traditionally given as a gift, meaning ‘the opening up of a new life.’ If treated well the scissors will last a lifetime. Note that carbon steel is not stainless steel - please clean after use and store in a dry place. Regular light oiling, preferably with Camellia oil, will prevent rust. Each pair is 18cm long and comes packed in a traditional Paulownia wooden box.
