Lyndsey Ingram is pleased to present Irish artist Michael Canning’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, The Deeper Air. The show comprises of new works on paper and several large paintings on canvas.
Canning selects indigenous plants and weeds for their structural interest and brings them back to the studio to paint from life. They are set against views of the rural landscape that surround his home in Ballingarry, County Limerick.
The materials echo this connection with the natural world. Canning often mixes ash and chalk into the paint. The supports are made from different papers that have been glued and layered, sanded back and added to, often over a period of several years. The works undergo a cyclical process of cutting away and overpainting, glueing and refining until he considers them complete.
