Sarah Graham at Galerie Maximillian, Aspen
We were delighted to visit Galerie Maximillian in Aspen last month to celebrate Sarah Graham’s latest body of work; twelve large scale drawings of beetles and cicadas with peonies and hellebores. Graham’s observant studies in Indian ink are a meditation on nature’s artistry. Each work spans two sheets of textured, handmade paper, framed to imitate the wooden Victorian specimen cases, where collected insects from across the globe can be seen in historical institutions such as the Natural History Museum in London.
These drawings are a continuation of her career-long focus on the natural world, which she has approached here with renewed vigour. The confident vitality of colour – warm reds and deep purples, delicate pale pinks and fresh greens – are a testament to her devotion to her subject.
